Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of self-silencing in romantic relationships in the association between adult attachment styles (anxious and avoidant attachment) and emotional eating among women. The study, designed as a correlational survey, was conducted with 406 voluntary female participants aged 18 and above residing in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Demographic Information Form, the Turkish Emotional Eating Scale, the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory-II, and the Self-Silencing Scale, and were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).According to the results of the structural equation model, anxious attachment had a significant and positive effect on both self-silencing and emotional eating. Avoidant attachment, on the other hand, showed a significant effect only on self-silencing, but not on emotional eating. Additionally, self-silencing was found to be a significant and positive predictor of emotional eating.Mediation analyses revealed that self-silencing played a significant mediating role in the relationship between anxious attachment and emotional eating. Accordingly, part of the effect of anxious attachment on emotional eating was found to be mediated through self-silencing. In contrast, the mediating role of self-silencing in the relationship between avoidant attachment and emotional eating was not supported.Regarding the explanatory power of the model, anxious and avoidant attachment together explained 59% of the variance in self-silencing, while anxious attachment and self-silencing explained 20% of the variance in emotional eating. These findings indicate that the tendency of anxiously attached individuals to suppress their emotions in romantic relationships constitutes an important psychological mechanism that increases emotional eating. Accordingly, it is suggested that attachment patterns and relational emotion regulation processes should be addressed together in interventions targeting emotional eating problems.
